Just Exes was an emotional rollercoaster! This book digs into your heart and makes you question humanity. I did enjoy this story a lot. I liked Lauren in Just Her Bodyguard and Just One Night. I was super excited to read her story. I loved how it started with Gage arresting her. Their exchanges were entertaining since it was clear that even after being apart for so long, they still had feelings for each other. I thought this story was so well done because it dove into a really hard subject. I couldn't stop reading because I wanted to know what happened. The way the book started, it hooked you from the very beginning. I needed to know what was going on with Gage and his ex-wife. But I also wanted to know why Lauren eventually broke up with Gage. It was clear she did it for someone else. I have to say I was surprised to find out why Lauren did what she did. I wasn't expecting the person who caused her to end her relationship with Gage to be the person it was. After some clues throughout the book I pieced together who Gage may have lost but I was still hopeful that it wasn't the way I thought. This book make me so sad and happy but I felt so bad for Gage and the things he had to go through. It also dealt with an assault that could have turned sexual if not for someone coming in to stop it. Just as a warning.
I loved the characters in this book! Lauren was so sweet, spunky, strong, stubborn, and dedicated. I just loved her so much. For her to do what she'd done for the person who asked her to give up the love of her life, was the ultimate selfless act. Gage was a dark character with such a tragic story. For what he'd gone through, it was amazing that he was as whole as he was. It seemed like he would be more broken. What he had to endure really hurt my heart and it was hard to read about it. I liked him because he was loyal and had so much love for the ones he cared for. It was nice to see more of Dallas, Willow, Maven, Samuel, Hudson and Stella. I liked that I got to get to know the Barnes parents more in this one. I read Just Neighbors first before I read any of the other books, so it was nice to see Kyle before that book and get to know him a little better. I hope Luke is getting his own book one day.
This was a such a great story and I am excited for Just Roommates!
Synopsis | Goodreads
Lauren Running into an ex you haven’t seen in nearly a decade is never a good time. Running into your ex while he’s arresting you is humiliating. The handcuffs close around my fists at the same time he promises to hate me until he takes his last breath. I can’t blame him. He pleaded for me not to walk away. He doesn’t know leaving him broke my heart as much as it did his. It wasn’t for me. Rather, it was for someone else. Gage I skipped town after Hurricane Lauren obliterated my heart. Coming home was a hard choice to make. Arresting her isn’t. She has no idea of the demons I carry with me now. No idea that I’m a new man. Two women ruined me. One I gave my heart to. The other punished me for it.
